The water is mainly associated with the <strong>data centres and electricity systems that power AI<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an important environmental issue because AI use is growing very rapidly, and some AI data centres require enormous amounts of computing power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_does_AI_use_water\"><\/span><strong>How does AI use water?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of an AI data centre as a huge building filled with extremely powerful computers, especially GPUs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>AI request \u2192 Powerful computers \u2192 Heat \u2192 Cooling \u2192 Water use<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is what happens:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>AI computers consume electricity<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Training an AI model and answering AI queries require powerful processors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Almost all the electricity eventually becomes <strong>heat<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The computers become extremely hot<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Modern AI servers can generate much more heat than ordinary computers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Data centres therefore need sophisticated cooling systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water can be used to remove that heat<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One common method uses cooling towers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Warm water is circulated and some of it <strong>evaporates<\/strong>, carrying heat away.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fresh water has to be added to replace the evaporated water. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that evaporation is a major source of water consumption in cooling-tower systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>There is also indirect water consumption<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI requires electricity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some power plants use water for cooling while generating that electricity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therefore, even when a data centre itself uses relatively little water, its electricity supply can have a water footprint.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2025 <em>Nature Sustainability<\/em> study estimated that AI servers deployed across the United States could have an annual water footprint of <strong>731\u20131,125 million cubic metres by 2030<\/strong>, depending on how rapidly they expand and where they are located. It estimated that about <strong>29% was direct water use and 71% indirect<\/strong> in its modelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_is_this_becoming_a_bigger_issue\"><\/span><strong>Why is this becoming a bigger issue?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of computing required for AI is increasing rapidly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IEA estimates that global data-centre electricity consumption rose <strong>17% in 2025<\/strong>, while electricity consumption from AI-focused data centres increased even faster. It projects total data-centre electricity consumption could roughly double from about <strong>485 TWh in 2025 to 950 TWh in 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So the concern isn&#8217;t that <strong>one ordinary AI question uses a huge amount of water<\/strong>. The IEA says a hyperscale AI-focused data centre can require <strong>100 MW or more<\/strong>, comparable to the electricity consumption of around 100,000 households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that electricity comes from fossil fuels, it can also contribute to greenhouse-gas emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Local_impact_can_be_much_greater_than_global_averages\"><\/span><strong>5. The better approach is to make <strong>AI computing much more water- and energy-efficient<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Use_closed-loop_cooling\"><\/span><strong>1. Use closed-loop cooling<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of continually consuming fresh water, data centres can use <strong>closed-loop systems<\/strong>, where the same water circulates repeatedly through the cooling system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Modern facilities are increasingly using such approaches. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that closed-loop cooling can greatly reduce water consumption compared with continuously evaporative systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Use_air_cooling_where_practical\"><\/span><strong>2. Use air cooling where practical<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In suitable climates, outside air can help remove heat without consuming large quantities of water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly attractive in cooler or dry climates, although it isn&#8217;t appropriate for every location or every high-density AI facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Use_advanced_liquid_cooling\"><\/span><strong>3. Build data centres in suitable locations<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This may be one of the most important solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies should consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Availability of freshwater<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local drought conditions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Climate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Renewable-energy availability<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Existing electricity infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Availability of recycled\/non-potable water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>An AI data centre should not ideally be placed in an area already suffering from severe water shortages.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research indicates that simply changing the geographical distribution of AI servers can have a very large effect on their water footprint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"5_Use_recycled_wastewater\"><\/span><strong>5. Make AI models more efficient<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is probably the most fundamental technological solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Developers can reduce the computing required for an AI task through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More efficient AI models<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better chips<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Model compression<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quantization<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Efficient algorithms<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Smaller models for simple tasks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Better server utilization<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The IEA reports that <strong>energy use per individual AI task has been falling very rapidly<\/strong>, although the growing number and complexity of AI applications can offset those efficiency gains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"7_Use_renewable_electricity\"><\/span><strong>7.
